Winemaker's Comments: 2003 Ravenswood Vintners Blend Merlot
Bucking the trend toward flabby Merlots, the Ravenswood Vintners Blend adds the structure of French oak to the varietal's opulent fresh-plum persona, creating a multidimensional mouthful that doesn't pander to the indiscriminating palates. Round and full with a spicy finish enhanced by notes of tobacco, leather, and vanilla, it's delicious upon release (though if you misplaced a few bottles in your cellar, you wouldn't be sorry five years from now).

A Gift from the Heavens
If I attempt to top what's provided by the folks at Ravenswood it would be a futile effort indeed. To be 100% honest, we bought this absolute gem of a Merlot on sale at our local retail establishment... for under $10. You'd be right to question if the low price influenced the positive impression this wine left, but you'd be dead wrong my friend if you thought my notes here are anything other than sincere.
The 2003 Ravenswood Vintners Blend Merlot balances perfectly on the fulcrum between a robust oaky Bordeaux and a fruity, jammy American Cab. Excellent mouthfeel, wonderful fruit and tobacco flavors, and a finish that leaves you waiting for another taste. A great wine at a ridiculously low price.
